The siege had begun in September 1644 and had not lifted properly since the previous autumn, and the food and ammunition the King had promised never came in sufficient quantity. Mayor William Ince finally persuaded the Royalist commander, Lord Byron, to negotiate. Talks began on 20 January and concluded on the first of February. On 3 February the Parliamentarians under Sir William Brereton occupied the city. Many of the inhabitants of Chester did not live to see it.]]></description>
