Sir George Carew had brought up to five thousand soldiers along the Beara coast and anchored the Tudor navy in the harbour beyond the walls. Inside the tower stood one hundred and forty-three Gaelic Irish defenders, a captain named Richard MacGeoghegan, and a Jesuit friar called Dominic Collins.
