The fire that decided the battle was never meant to happen. In the summer of 1737, a Russian army of sixty to seventy thousand men had thrown itself against the walls of Ochakov, the Ottoman fortress guarding the mouth of the Dnieper, and the first assault had been thrown back with terrible losses. Then the mortar shells found their mark. Flames spread through the crowded fortress, reached a powder magazine, and in an instant an explosion tore the defenses apart and killed thousands of the people sheltering inside. What had looked like a stalemate became, within hours, a catastrophe that no one had planned and no one could stop.
