Левенсон, Public domain. The Crimean Tatars called this stretch of coast Ali-Agok, the quiet harbor, and they fished its calm shallows long before the town had a name or a founder. In 1894 a scientist arrived and gave it both. Sergey Skadovsky was a hydrobiologist and biochemist who also sat on the regional council of the Russian Empire, and on the lands he owned beside that quiet Tatar harbor he laid out a port and lent it his own name. He and his wife are buried in the town he built, which grew, in the century after, into one of the northern Black Sea's favorite places to spend a summer.
