They loaded at the mouth of the Ông Đốc river, on the Gulf of Thailand coast of Cà Mau, carrying southern cadres north under the terms of the Geneva Accords — the final sailing of a regroupment that was supposed to last two years, until nationwide elections settled the question of who governed Vietnam. The elections were never held. Families who waved from this shoreline expecting a two-year separation would wait twenty, and many of the people on those decks never saw this river again. Sông Đốc is now a working fishing town of some 47,000, and it is still, first and last, a place people leave from and come back to by water.
