When the glaciers that buried southern Vancouver Island began retreating roughly fifteen thousand years ago, they dropped their load of boulders into the Sooke River valley, and the meltwater did the rest — spinning those stones in eddies, hour after hour, century after century, grinding cylindrical basins down into the sandstone of the valley floor. The result is a stretch of river that looks engineered: smooth round pools, some of them deep enough to jump into, linked by chutes and narrow canyon walls. On a hot July afternoon the potholes are full of teenagers doing exactly what the geology invites. The process that made them is still running, just far too slowly to watch.
