A covered Victorian canopy runs almost the entire length of the street, stretched out over the pavement on both sides, so the shopping is dry whatever the weather. That detail tells you something about Southport. It is a town that planned for the British climate from the beginning, and then put a pier, a pleasure garden, and fourteen golf courses around the plan.
