On the night of 7 March 1942, in stormy water off the Taman coast, a crippled Soviet destroyer named Smyshlyony finally lost her fight to stay afloat. She had struck a mine the day before, and the flooding had spread from one boiler room to the next until her power failed and the sea took her by the stern. What made her end so cruel was not the mine but what came after. As the ship went under, her own depth charges detonated in the water, and the shockwave killed almost everyone still aboard. Of a crew that in wartime numbered more than 270, only two men were pulled from the sea alive. The mine that sank her had been laid by the Soviets themselves.
