A handful of survivors stumbled toward his ship, begging for passage. Cavendish took the cannons he wanted, took only the pilot Tomé Hernández for his own use, and left the rest to their fate. Then he gave the ruined settlement the name that history has kept: Port Famine. This was the wreckage of one of the boldest and most catastrophic ideas of the Spanish Empire — an attempt to colonize the Strait of Magellan itself and bolt shut the only known door between the Atlantic and the Pacific.]]></description>
