The town the Spanish had raised three years earlier still stood in outline, but its people were mostly gone, scattered as corpses along the shore or driven into the wilderness by hunger. A handful of survivors stumbled toward his ship, begging for passage. Cavendish took the cannons he wanted, took only the pilot Tomé Hernández for his own use, and left the rest to their fate. Then he gave the ruined settlement the name that history has kept: Port Famine. This was the wreckage of one of the boldest and most catastrophic ideas of the Spanish Empire — an attempt to colonize the Strait of Magellan itself and bolt shut the only known door between the Atlantic and the Pacific.
