It took only ten minutes. At 23:33 on the night of 27 July 1941, an explosion tore through the SS Lenin as she made her way south through the darkened Black Sea, and by the time the sound had faded across the water she was already gone. Somewhere between two and a half and four and a half thousand people went down with her - a death toll that rivals the Titanic and the Lusitania, and in some accounts exceeds them both. Yet the wreck lies at 44.33 degrees north with almost no monument in the wider world's memory, a casualty of the war that swallowed her whole and left no room for mourning.
