The building gave everyone four and a half minutes. That is an almost unheard-of courtesy from a structural failure, and it is the only reason this is a story about engineering reform rather than about funerals. On the morning of April 23, 1988, a brand-new Save-On-Foods opened at Station Square in Burnaby with a seniors' discount event. Within ten minutes a water pipe overhead burst and began spraying - not because of a plumbing fault, but because a roof beam above a steel column was slowly twisting out of shape and crushing the pipe as it went. Shoppers stood and watched it happen. Several of them took photographs.
