
The forest was the answer to an earlier emergency. Sand had been blowing across this corner of Thy since roughly 1450, swallowing fields and burying parishes, and from 1889 the Danish state planted Østerild Klitplantage to hold the ground still. It worked. Then, in June 2010, parliament voted to cut a corridor through it — plans involved clearing up to 1,200 hectares of protected plantation — so that the largest wind turbines ever built would have somewhere to spin. A rotor 236 metres across needs more clearance than a forest is willing to give.
Certifying a prototype to the international IEC 61400 standard is not something you can do behind a factory. The site needs reliable strong wind, a particular surface roughness so the airflow behaves predictably, open ground in every direction, and it must sit outside EU Special Protection Areas. Seventeen candidate areas were examined across Denmark. Østerild — flat, windy, thinly settled, with the North Sea a few kilometres upwind — was the one that fitted every criterion at once. The Folketing settled on it in June 2010, the test centre was inaugurated in October 2012, and it is run by the Technical University of Denmark from its Risø campus. Everything measured here exists to answer one commercial question: will the machine survive twenty-five years of this?
Felling protected forest to build wind turbines is precisely the trade-off that splits an environmental movement, and it did. The Danish Ornithological Society and the Danish Society for Nature Conservation both opposed the site, and the latter went as far as identifying alternative locations where the centre could have gone instead. The industry's counter-argument was speed: without a Danish test field, prototype development would simply move abroad. That haste became a grievance in its own right, and parliament pushed the decision through regardless. What has come back since is monitoring rather than rhetoric. A 2015 report found no measurable harm to birds or bats at the site. New ponds and open ground improved conditions for bats. The first sea eagles settled in the area in 2015 and have stayed.
The field is a line of nine test stands, each paired with its own meteorological mast set due west — upwind, so the instruments read the air before the rotor has touched it. At the northern and southern ends of the line stand two guyed lattice masts 250 metres tall, lit for aircraft. Nothing here is permanent. A turbine arrives, spends some months under measurement, and comes down again to make room for the next one, which is why the skyline changes from year to year and why photographs of the site date themselves instantly. Permitted height has climbed with the machines. In 2020 the tallest reached 240 metres; the site is now cleared for tip heights up to 330.
For a couple of years running, the tallest wind turbine on the planet stood in a Danish dune plantation. Siemens Gamesa's SG 14-222 DD took the title in November 2021 and held it about a year. Then the Vestas V236-15.0 MW went up in December 2022 — 280 metres to blade tip, fifteen megawatts — and held it roughly six months. Siemens Gamesa's SG 14-236 DD reached 278 metres. In late 2024 the same manufacturer began installing a 21 MW offshore prototype under HIPPOW, a European Innovation Fund project. As of January 2024, three companies were testing at Østerild: Siemens Gamesa, Vestas and GE Renewable Energy. The world's tallest and most-powerful titles have since moved on — to Germany and China, respectively — because records here are measured in months, and the next prototype is already on the road.
Nobody planned for a certification facility to become a destination, and yet it has. A visitor centre opened in 2017, with a fourteen-metre viewing tower built from a section of turbine tower, and the site now draws somewhere between thirty and fifty thousand visitors a year — 50,000 in 2020. There is a 50 kW charging station in the car park, which is either a convenience or a statement depending on your mood. The industry, meanwhile, has already asked for more: additional stands beyond the nine here, and eventually a site capable of taking machines approaching 400 metres. The sand that this plantation was raised to stop has been quiet for a century. The argument about what the ground is for has not.
The test field lies at 57.0516°N, 8.8841°E, in Østerild Klitplantage about 20 km northeast of Thisted and roughly 25 km east of Hanstholm. Treat it as a major obstacle area rather than a sightseeing target: two permanently lit 250-metre guyed lattice masts anchor the north and south ends of the line, and prototype turbines on the nine stands have reached 240 metres, with the site permitted to 330. Guy wires are effectively invisible from the air. Give the whole corridor generous lateral and vertical clearance and check NOTAMs, because the machines change through the year. The site is unmistakable from 20 km out — a rank of white towers standing above flat plantation, with the Limfjord to the south and the North Sea to the west. Nearest field is Thisted (EKTS), about 15 km west-southwest; Aalborg (EKYT) is the nearest scheduled airport, roughly 80 km east.
