The village crest is a chessboard. Sixty-four squares in black and silver, tipped onto one corner against a red field, granted by the provincial authorities in November 1937. Heraldry is rarely this literal. But Ströbeck, a farming village of about a thousand people in the northern Harz foothills eight kilometres west of Halberstadt, has never been shy about the thing it is known for. The game is on the school timetable. It is in the museum, on the emergency banknotes the village once printed, and in the name the place gives itself: Schachdorf, the chess village.
