Photo credit original map (see authors of Relief map of Crimea.jpg), derivative work: Dinamik, Public domain. In the depth of a Crimean winter, when much of the northern hemisphere's birdlife has fled the cold, this scatter of low islets fills with wings. More than twenty-five hundred swans settle on the shallow waters, joined by tens of thousands of ducks and thousands of geese, coots, and gulls, until the sky and the sea seem made of birds. The Swan Islands rise barely two meters above the Black Sea, so flat and so slight that from a distance they scarcely register as land at all. Yet for the creatures that travel the great migratory routes, this almost-invisible place is one of the most important addresses on the map.
