In the heat of summer the Syvash, a sprawling tangle of lagoons on the western edge of the Sea of Azov, warms to bathwater and gives off a putrid, sulphurous reek that carries for miles on the wind. The water is so shallow you could walk for kilometers and never wet your chest, and so charged with salt that in places it glows a surreal, cosmetic pink. This is no ordinary bay. The Syvash very nearly cuts Crimea from the mainland altogether, leaving only the thin Isthmus of Perekop and the long Arabat Spit to bridge the gap, and for centuries that geography has made it both a natural wonder and a natural battlefield. Registered as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, it is one of the largest and strangest coastal lagoon systems in Europe.
