Photo credit Hjart, CC BY-SA 4.0. In 1801, twenty thousand people in Tønder and the villages around it made lace by hand. The town itself held a few thousand. Bobbins clattered in cottages across the whole southwestern corner of Jutland, turning out a point-ground lace with honeycomb fillings and small square tallies worked into the mesh — tønderkniplinger, a pattern specific enough to this one border town that it still carries its name. The tall gabled houses along the main street are what that work bought. Then machines learned to do it, and an industry that had employed a district became a hobby.
