In the early 1990s, a repair plant at the edge of Taganrog was handed a grim assignment: dismantle warplanes. Under a landmark arms-control treaty, hundreds of Soviet combat aircraft were to be pulled apart and reduced to scrap, and this base was designated as one of the places where frontline jets would go to die. But two officers looked at the fighters rolling in for destruction and had a different idea. Save one of each, they proposed. Strip the engines, pull the systems, but keep a single example intact. That quiet act of preservation is why Southern Russia's only aviation museum exists today.
