The sound reaches you before anything else does: at dawn and dusk, the roar of lions rolls across the Crimean foothills near the Taigan Reservoir, a sound wholly out of place in this landscape of vineyards and pale limestone hills. Yet here they are, some sixty African lions, along with tigers and other animals, ranging over more than thirty hectares of open ground. Taigan Safari Park bills itself as the largest breeding ground for lions and other big predators in Europe, an audacious thing to build in the dry uplands of inland Crimea, and its prides have made it one of the most talked-about, and most controversial, animal attractions in the region.
