At nearly six and a half feet, the Argentine struck the ball from a height that bent the geometry of the court, and the sportswriters reached for the only nickname that fit: the Tower of Tandil. The name carried his hometown to Flushing Meadows and back. But Tandil had been making towers long before it made tennis players - towers of granite shouldered up out of the flat pampas, and one famous boulder that gave the city both its name and, eventually, a kind of heartbreak.]]></description>
