It is a working city of more than a quarter million people in the center-south of Chile, equidistant between the Pacific and the Andes, the place where the produce of the valleys and the crafts of the Mapuche come to be bought and sold. Even its own visitors' guides admit it has little to offer the tourist. But that plainness is a kind of honesty. This is the true capital of Araucanía, the beating commercial heart of Mapuche country, and the city where a railwayman's son named Neftalí Reyes grew up to become Pablo Neruda. Look past the surface and Temuco has a great deal to say.]]></description>
