Thetis Island: Introduction

Photo credit David Stanley from Nanaimo, Canada, CC BY 2.0. A single Royal Navy survey in 1851 named two islands here, and neither name came from anyone who lived on them. One island took the name of the ship - HMS Thetis, a 36-gun frigate, itself named for a sea nymph out of Greek mythology. The island immediately south took the name of the ship's commander, Captain Augustus Kuper. Both labels stuck for a century and a half. Then, in 2010, one of them came off: Kuper Island became Penelakut Island, restored to the name of the people whose homeland it has always been. Thetis Island is still Thetis, 2,560 acres of arbutus and Douglas fir with 379 residents, a pair of marinas, and one of the last one-room schoolhouses operating in Canada.
