Thorsberg moor: Introduction

Among the things pulled out of the Thorsberg moor is a pair of trousers with the feet still attached - an early example of what would eventually be called socks, worn by someone in northern Germany before the year 300. Wool does not last seventeen centuries. It lasts in a bog, where the water is acid, the peat is airless, and the bacteria that would otherwise eat cloth cannot work. For roughly five hundred years, from about 100 BC to around 500 AD, people carried valuable things out to this water near what is now Süderbrarup in Angeln and let them go. Weapons, armour, brooches, gold discs and clothing went down into the peat. Almost all of it was still there when a schoolteacher from Flensburg started digging in 1858.
