Tibet Art Center: Introduction

Auvaistentie runs dead straight through Alastaro, past grain silos and machine sheds, through country so level that a church tower counts as topography. At number 400 stands a village schoolhouse of the kind Finland built by the hundred and then closed by the hundred. The pupils are long gone. In their place, behind those classroom windows, sit roughly two hundred objects with no obvious business being in a Loimaa grain field: gilded bronze bodhisattvas, ritual instruments, jewellery, and cotton scrolls painted with gold leaf. A regional newspaper once put the effect into a headline — this is not a sight you would picture in the middle of Alastaro. It is the only Tibetan art centre in Finland.
