Girders sagged into the Elbe where German engineers had blown the span, and on the far bank stood soldiers that nobody in Second Lieutenant William Robertson's four-man patrol had ever laid eyes on. For a few bad minutes on 25 April 1945, the Soviets took the Americans for Germans. Then a voice carried across the water - "Muscovi-Washington. Hitler caput. Harrah!" - and the shooting never started. Two armies that had been closing on each other from opposite ends of a continent climbed out onto the wreckage and shook hands.
