About fifteen percent of the jeans produced in Brazil come from a single town in the Pernambuco agreste — a municipality so small it barely covers thirty square kilometres and holds around forty thousand residents. Toritama has no port, no irrigation water and a river that runs only part of the year. What it has is sewing. This place rebuilt its entire economy twice in half a century, and the second rebuild worked so completely that buyers now drive here from across the country to load their cars with denim and drive home again.
