Tortosa Cathedral: Introduction

Photo credit Fernando Pascullo, CC BY-SA 4.0. There is a shape medieval builders were never quite able to draw. A regular heptagon—seven equal sides—has no exact ruler-and-compass construction, a fact that made it a genuine headache for masons who worked by geometry and rule of thumb. And yet, at the eastern end of Tortosa's cathedral, the apse curves through seven sides in a rare heptagonal plan. The builders who began this church in 1347 could not lay out a perfect seven-sided figure the classical way, so they cheated elegantly, working instead from a system of proportions. The result still stands at the heart of the old town, a puzzle solved in stone.
