On September 16, 1658, in the town of Hadiach in the Cossack Hetmanate, negotiators put their names to a treaty that imagined a radically different future for the whole region. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the vast dual state that then dominated Eastern Europe, was to become a commonwealth of three nations, adding a Grand Principality of Ruthenia in which the Cossacks and Ruthenian people would stand as equals beside Poles and Lithuanians. Had it held, a Ukrainian state might have risen three centuries before one finally did. Instead, the treaty became a monument to a road not taken.]]></description>
