Triunfo: Introduction

Photo credit Valdy Ramos, CC BY-SA 4.0. Five degrees Celsius. That is what a winter evening can do in Triunfo, which sounds unremarkable until you remember where you are: the Pernambuco sertão, the Brazilian semi-arid, a landscape whose defining feature everywhere else is that it does not have enough water. Drive north from Serra Talhada on the PE-365 and the caatinga scrub thins, the road climbs the Serra da Baixa Verde, and somewhere on the way up the vegetation changes its mind. At around a thousand metres the thorn gives way to green. Triunfo gets roughly 1,070 millimetres of rain a year and averages 21 degrees. The rest of the sertão gets half that rain and sits five degrees hotter. Northeasterners call places like this a brejo de altitude — a highland moist enclave — and Triunfo has been calling itself the Oasis of the Sertão for a long time.
