The travel guides give Tutóia about four lines, and most of them are bus times. It is, they explain, a place you pass through between Lençóis Maranhenses and Parnaíba — where you get off a bus and onto a pickup truck. That is a fair description of what a traveller does here and a poor description of what the place is: a municipality of roughly 53,000 people spread across 1,566 square kilometres of coastal plain, mangrove and dune, holding more than eighty islands and one bank of the great delta at the mouth of the Parnaíba. Tutóia is a stopover the way an airport is a hallway.
