It now has roughly 762,000, which makes it the second-largest city in the state and the 28th largest municipality in Brazil — a low, wide, fast city of broad avenues and warehouses out on the cerrado plateau of the Triângulo Mineiro, four hundred kilometres from the nearest colonial postcard. Nothing about it is quaint. Almost everything about it is busy.
