Photo credit Aniello, CC BY-SA 3.0. There are perhaps six thousand golden-headed lion tamarins left in the wild, and every one of them lives in Bahia. Not Brazil generally - Bahia specifically, in the lowland and premontane forests of the state's southern coast, and nowhere else. The animal is small enough to sit in cupped hands, with a mane of burnt orange framing a dark face, and it spends its days between three and ten metres off the ground, prying insects out of bromeliads and eating fruit for the quick sugar. Roughly 18,715 hectares of that forest are fenced off from human interference inside the Una Biological Reserve, created on 10 December 1980. It protects the largest wild population of the species in the most intact habitat that remains. That sentence carries more weight when you learn how little habitat that is: forest cover across Bahia has been reduced to around two percent of what once stood.
