All that remains of the cottage is the foundation stones. Väinö Linna was born there on 20 December 1920, the seventh child of a butcher whose own father had been a tenant farmer on the Honkola estate, and by the time he was seven his father was dead. He got six years of school. Then he cut timber and worked other men's fields until he left for Tampere in 1938 to become a fitter at the Finlayson mills. Nothing about that biography suggests a man who would end up on the twenty-markka note. Urjala is a municipality of about four and a half thousand people spread across five hundred square kilometres of Pirkanmaa farmland and forest, and it has an oddly heavy share of Finnish history stored inside it.
