      <description><![CDATA[Uusikaupunki means "new town," and it has not been one since 19 April 1617, when Gustav II Adolf granted it commercial rights and a harbour and pointed it at the sea. Under its Swedish name, Nystad, it turns up in histories that have nothing to do with Finland: in 1721 the Great Northern War between Sweden and Russia was ended by a treaty signed here, and every account of eighteenth-century Europe files it under the name of this small harbour town on the Bothnian coast. Fourteen thousand seven hundred and eighty-three people live here now. The old streets are wooden, low and unnervingly wide, and the reason for that width is a fire.]]></description>
