Stretched across what is now West Virginia and northeastern Kentucky, the proposed colony took its name from Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, whose ancestors were thought to descend from the Vandals - the Germanic tribe that sacked Rome in 455. A colony named for barbarian invaders, planned by men in powdered wigs, ultimately erased by a revolution they helped trigger.]]></description>
