The name itself tells you the place was once apart. Wallasey comes from the Old English Walh - the same root that gives us Wales - and means "the foreigner," or more specifically the Welsh-speaking Britons. The suffix -ey means an island. The pool is now the docks. The marshes are drained. The dunes are tamed by the promenade. But the higher ground that the Anglo-Saxons saw across the water is still there, holding 85,610 people at the 2021 census - the merged seaside villages of Egremont, Liscard, New Brighton, Poulton, Seacombe, and Wallasey Village.
