Count what left the hill: twenty aircraft, maybe thirty, depending on which record you trust. Now count what it cost to build the place they came from: around two thousand men and women dead in under a year. The Walpersberg is a sandstone mesa above the Saale near Kahla in Thuringia, sixty million years in the making, and for eleven months of 1944 and 1945 it was one of the most ambitious and least productive industrial projects of the Third Reich — a bomb-proof factory for the Messerschmitt Me 262, hollowed out of a porcelain works' abandoned sand mines by people who had no say in the matter. No amount of engineering ingenuity reconciles those two figures.
