There is a golf course on Eagle Ridge in Coquitlam, and a subdivision above it, and somewhere beneath the fairways and the cul-de-sacs runs the line of the first purpose-built permanent road course ever laid in Canada. A volunteer car club started digging into that hillside in 1957. They held their first race on 26 July 1959. Over the next three decades Gilles Villeneuve, Keke Rosberg, Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan and Michael Andretti all turned laps on it. Then Greater Vancouver ran out of room, and a racetrack turned out to be a lot of flat land on a mountainside with a view.
