Anton Chekhov did not come to Yalta to be a country gentleman. He came because his lungs were failing. Tuberculosis had turned the mild Crimean coast into a prescription, and so in 1898, flush with the success of a play that had nearly broken him, he built a white house on a hillside above the sea and set about the strange work of dying slowly while writing brilliantly. The house he raised there, all pale walls and unexpected angles, is now a museum, but it began as one man's attempt to make a home out of borrowed time.
