A bulk carrier under the flag of Panama comes down the Elbe on the ebb, and from the bank at Schulau a loudspeaker announces her name, her nationality, the yard that built her and the year she was launched. The Hamburg flag on the mast beside the restaurant dips. Two signal flags run up - U and W, the old wish for a safe voyage. Then the Panamanian national anthem rolls out across the water, and sometimes, if the officer of the watch is in the mood, the ship answers with her whistle. This has been happening at Willkomm-Hoft, the Welcome Point, since 1952, and it is still done by hand.
