Walk the Yalta waterfront on a summer evening and you will find the whole town out with you, dressed in their best, strolling the mile-long promenade from the McDonald's at one end to the old Hotel Oreanda at the other. This is a place that has spent two centuries perfecting the art of the seaside stroll. The mountains rise green and sudden behind the harbor, the Black Sea glitters ahead, and somewhere along the beach a cafe will lend you an umbrella if you buy a drink. Yalta wears its layers openly, part imperial spa, part Soviet holiday camp, entirely devoted to the pleasant business of being beside the sea.
