On the rolling grassland of the Yelanets Steppe Nature Reserve, a hundred kilometers north of the Black Sea, a herd of American bison grazes ground that once belonged to a wilder cast of creatures entirely. Their presence is startling and deliberate, an experiment in restoring what a vanishing steppe has lost. This is the only steppe reserve in Right-bank Ukraine, the land west of the Dnieper River, and it protects a fragment of the largest untouched grassland tract left along the northern Black Sea coast, a survivor in a region long ago given over almost entirely to the plow.
