Their presence is startling and deliberate, an experiment in restoring what a vanishing steppe has lost. This is the only steppe reserve in Right-bank Ukraine, the land west of the Dnieper River, and it protects a fragment of the largest untouched grassland tract left along the northern Black Sea coast, a survivor in a region long ago given over almost entirely to the plow.]]></description>
