On a winter morning in January 1863, gas-lit wooden carriages were hauled by a steam locomotive through a brick tunnel between Paddington and Farringdon. The smoke was sulphurous. The passengers were thrilled. Thirty-eight thousand of them packed onto the first day's service, so many that the Metropolitan Railway had to borrow trains from its neighbours just to keep up. By the end of that first year, 9.5 million journeys had been completed on the world's first underground passenger railway. A century and a half on, the network the Victorians invented carries 1.18 billion journeys a year across eleven lines and 272 stations. It has become the operating manual that every other underground system on Earth quietly studies.
The early lines were built shallow, by digging an enormous trench down a London street, building a brick tunnel in it, and then putting the road back on top. The first tubes, opened in the 1890s, went deeper. Engineers used the Greathead shield, a wrought-iron cylinder patented in 1869 by Peter W. Barlow and refined by James Henry Greathead, to drive circular tunnels through London clay at depths of 60 feet or more. The 1890 City & South London Railway, between King William Street and Stockwell, used 10-foot 6-inch diameter tunnels and electric locomotives hauling small wooden carriages with opaque windows. Passengers called them padded cells. The name Tube stuck because the tunnels really were tubes, one for each direction, almost circular, ringed with cast iron. Despite the nickname, only 45 percent of today's network is actually underground.
In 1931, a 29-year-old electrical draughtsman named Harry Beck sketched a tube map on his own time. He stripped away the river and the streets and the geographic accuracy, drew every line at 45 or 90 degrees, and spaced the stations at roughly equal intervals. London Transport rejected it as too radical. They printed it in 1933 anyway, in a small pamphlet, as an experiment. It immediately became the easiest underground map in the world to use. Beck was paid five guineas and continued to refine it for decades. The map he designed has been imitated by transit systems from New York to Tokyo, was voted a British design icon in 2006, and now includes the Docklands Light Railway, London Overground, the Elizabeth line, and the Trams. The original was small enough to fit in a wallet. The modern one needs to fold five ways.
During the Blitz, Londoners filled the deep tube stations night after night, bedding down on platforms while bombs fell overhead. The stations were not as safe as they felt. On 11 January 1941, a bomb penetrated the booking hall of Bank Station and the blast killed 111 people, many of them sleeping in the passageways. On 3 March 1943, a test of new air-raid sirens and a poorly understood anti-aircraft rocket triggered a panicked rush at Bethnal Green Underground station. The crowd compressed on the badly lit staircase. A woman tripped near the bottom. The press of bodies behind her could not stop. One hundred and seventy-three people died, including 62 children, in what remains the largest single loss of life on the London Underground network. There is now a memorial above the entrance, a hovering stairwell in bronze cast with the names of every person who died.
Three names shape the way the Underground looks. Frank Pick joined the company in 1906 as a publicity officer and rose to chief executive. He believed great design was a moral obligation as much as a business one, and he commissioned everything: the typography, the posters, the architecture, the moquette upholstery. Edward Johnston designed the Johnston typeface in 1916, still in use today as TfL Johnston, with its distinctive diamond dots on the lowercase i and j. Charles Holden designed the modernist and art-deco station buildings of the 1920s and 1930s, including Arnos Grove, Sudbury Town, and the 55 Broadway headquarters with avant-garde sculptures by Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill, and Henry Moore. The red, blue, and white roundel, refined from a 1908 Underground Group emblem, became the network's signature mark. It belongs now, like the typeface, like the map, to the visual grammar of London itself.
The Tube still runs at the heart of London. Five million passenger journeys a day. Trains every two minutes in the rush. "Mind the gap" announced over the platform PA system as the train pulls in - a phrase introduced in 1968 and now so emotionally weighted that Londoners have it on coffee mugs and tattoos. In 2014 TfL became the first transit system in the world to accept contactless bank card payments, a technology now licensed to New York and Boston. The 24-hour Night Tube began on the Victoria and Central lines in August 2016. The Elizabeth line opened in 2022 through a £19 billion east-west tunnel. The Bank disaster of 1941 and the Bethnal Green crush of 1943 still stand quietly behind every safety procedure on the platform today. The original Metropolitan Railway tunnel from Paddington to Farringdon is still used by the Hammersmith & City line. The world's first underground railway is also one of its busiest.
